Team WRAC Photo Post 70-mile ride

Mission accomplished… Well, sort of.

We did it! Sort of… We finished (in style), but mother nature prevented us from completing the 100-mile challenge. In fact, we made it to mile 32 (the cut-off point) with plenty of time to spare only to be told that the course would be closed due to inclement weather. (Weather was horrible for most of the ride!)

Regardless, I am so happy for Wannabe Riders, we did an outstanding job, together.

Meanwhile, we can’t forget about our ‘Wannabe Runners’. Congratulations are also in order for the team members who completed the 10k on saturday. Personals bests were achieved by all who ran and it was great to share in the moment with them.

Thank you to everyone who supported Team Wannabe Riders Against Cancer. We will most certainly be back next year to tackle the 100. As always, LS 2010, was a moving experience. One that I will never forget.

Stay tuned for more and commentary and numerous photos galleries from the entire weekend.

Oh, did I mention that we all saw Lance?

TEAM LAWN

This new addition to the event is where we will gather in a dedicated space provided by LIVESTRONG. (Teams that raise over $10,000 by the deadlines posted below will receive a $300 credit toward a tent or catering). Wannabe Riders will have a tented area, food or both as a “home base”.

PACKET PICK UP

It is important that you authorize the Team Captain (Gerald) to pick up your event packet (on Friday). It makes the process a lot easier and saves you from having to stand in line on Saturday (it’s a very long line too!).
The event will ONLY issue bibs, packets, and incentives by team members who complete the form below. All other individuals will be responsible for picking up their own items during the LIVESTRONG Challenge Village. To authorize Gerald to pick-up your bib, packet, and incentives you must visit:
  1. http://www.livestrong.org/Log-In
  2. Under the large font of ‘LOG IN’ please find My.LIVESTRONG, click on it
  3. Enter login & password (should be the same as the login info you use to get into your fundraising page)
  4. Click on TEAM LIVESTRONG 2010
  5. Scroll to the bottom and click on 2010 Team Will Call 2010 – Team Members

Please make sure you do this ASAP. Cheers!

Gran Fando, Philadelphia

The Philly Gran Fando is coming up!

Wannabe Riders participants: Wyatt B., Patrick Z

From their website:

Gran Fondos are long distance, mass-participation cycling events – not races – that have become immensely popular in Italy.  Participation is open to recreational and competitive amateur cyclists, and tens of thousands of riders of all abilities participate.

Gran Fondos are often named after famous cyclists of the past, or after companies with a long heritage in cycling.  Some of the most famous Gran Fondos include the Prosecco Classic, the Nove Colli and the Felice Gimondi.

Gran Fondo Colnago Philadelphia
Now this exciting cycling tradition has come to Philadelphia as part of America’s first Gran Fondo series.

Just like in Italy, the Gran Fondo Colnago Philadelphia includes a mass start, three challenging routes, fantastic giveaways, a consumer expo, well-stocked aid stations, mechanical support and a fun post-race party.

Every participant in Gran Fondo Colnago Philadelphia wears a timing chip.  This ensures that cyclists complete the entire course, and allows the event to score athletes over the toughest climb and award King – and Queen – of the Mountains prizes in every age group.

All Abilities Welcome
Some cyclists enter for the challenge and satisfaction of making it to the finish line; others want to push themselves and their friends; and some ride to win.

Charity Support
The Gran Fondo Colnago Philadelphia helps support the research and educational initiatives of the American Melanoma Foundation.  Skin care and sun protection are important issues for everyone, especially endurance athletes who spend hours outside riding their bikes.

Couple Raises $3M To Fight Rare Cancer

Have you ever heard of Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC)? What exactly is it, most ask?

Please watch this recently aired short clip from a Boston news station about Marnie and Jeff Kaufman, Co-Founders of the Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Research Foundation (ACCRF). It will only take a few minutes and it shares her poignant story about her fight with ACC and her determination to find better treatments and cures for this disease.

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/video/24074158/index.html

ACC is a rare cancer, typically originating in the head and neck region. This malignancy has a slow – and sometimes relentless – progression with a tendency to grow along nerves. Particularly high rates of recurrence and metastasis to the lungs lead to a poor prognosis beyond ten years.

The ACCRF supports research into adenoid cystic carcinoma that will accelerate the development of improved therapies and a cure for the disease.

Why is this important?

This is the disease that I am currently battling and the reason why Wannabe Riders exists. Although I am doing my small part in life to find a cure for cancer (vis a vis LIVESTRONG) via fundraising efforts, my main goal is to find ways to raise money for the ACCRF.

I have since met (and currently) and now work with Marnie (above) to bring more awareness to this disease. At the very least, if I can make Wannabe Riders more aware of this rare disease, then I have done my job. Thank you for spreading the word.
